Brand New Daihatsu Ayla Turbo, Not A Modification

The image that comes to mind when talking about the Daihatsu Ayla is definitely not far from the LCGC Low Cost Green Car. Economical, small and a mainstay of urbanites. What happens if someone is prankster at the Daihatsu research and development center and says, "We're giving a turbo, let's go!"

Apparently, that's what happened. Remarkably, it is not just talk, but it is manifested in a business totality that deserves thumbs up. Taking the base Daihatsu Ayla 1.2 R with manual transmission, Astra Daihatsu Motor, produced Ayla Turbo with 200 PS power, 242 Nm of torque.

It was first introduced at GIIAS. The question at that time was whether this car could work? Astra Daihatsu Motor (ADM) then invited us to their research center. To prove that the Ayla Turbo is not just a show car.

BUILD A NEW CAR

Quite amazed, because this is like building a new car. Not just a modification of the papas cylinder head, then install a noisy exhaust. To reach 200 PS, Daihatsu engineers overhauled Ayla's 1.2-liter intake engine to fit one more petrol injector, for each cylinder. So Ayla Turbo has eight injectors. Then, attach a turbocharger made by Garret.

Although it does not explain what happened with the dual VVT-i system, from these two things, other changes followed. The engine compression is lowered using a low compression piston, the connecting rod (piston handlebar) is replaced with a stronger one. Additionally, an intercooler is installed to aid in turbo performance. Finally, the ECU was slightly modified and added to the piggyback device.

Changes also penetrate the transmission by using a stiffer single clutch, plus raising the final gear from 0.860 to 0.915 to catch the top speed. Meanwhile, to stop the steps, Daihatsu changed the rear brake that had been pounded into a disc. Remarkably, the front brake is equipped with four pistons and is made by Brembo.

RUN THE CAR WEIGHT

The body does not escape change. What remains on the front, lights and DRL. The grille is slightly modified and appears to be larger than standard.

The bumper combines with the body kit, air intake at both corners, to cool the brakes. The front and rear fenders are wider to accommodate the wide semi-slick tires.

In the interior, don't expect to find a head unit or airbag. The upholstery, door trim and other convenience features are removed, transforming a racing car kit. Starting from the roll cage, bucket seat models, fire extinguishers, racing wheels with quick release features, to digital instrument panels that are very easy to read. The side glass is replaced with polycarbonate material, which is not only light but also strong.

This modification, makes Ayla R lighter. But they did not say how much weight it would cut. Our guess is that if the standard weight of the Ayla R is 880 kg, it looks like Ayla Turbo is under or close to the weight of Ayla D (770 kg). Several points of body connection are also strengthened, for

to compensate for the performance. This change follows the racing car regulations issued by the IMI. This is just to prove that Daihatsu can make a car like this.

DRIVING SENSATION

Unfortunately, because there is only one car, to reduce the risk we are only allowed to sit in the passenger seat. But from this point of view, it is felt that this is a 'mini monster' that is ready to bulldoze a Honda City or Toyota Vios (standard).

The power of the pounding is felt instantaneously when the gas pedal is kicked out. According to Daihatsu, the acceleration from 0-100 km / h can be achieved in just 10.3 seconds. The effect of the torque steer (steering pulls in one direction while accelerating) appears to be absent. The car-style suspension circuit is very pronounced. It's tough but the car is incredibly stable and obedient, controlled at any level.

From that short session, we must say that the Daihatsu Ayla Turbo exceeded our expectations. Good job, Astra Daihatsu Motor. However, the Ayla Turbo project was once again, only to showcase Astra Daihatsu Motor's Research & Development capabilities. So, don't expect to buy or order. But for those who are looking for inspiration, it can be imitated.
